Treatment of children

When should I schedule my child's first trip to the dentist? Should my 3-year-old be flossing? How do I know if my child needs braces? These are some of the questions that every parent asks themselves about their children’s dental care. They know the cavity must be prevented, but they do not always know the best way to do it. Here are some tips and guidelines.

Baby teeth

In fact baby teeth are formed before the baby is born. Initially the first teeth to emerge are the lower central incisors in the fourth month, followed by the upper central incisors. The other teeth of the deciduous series end around the age of 3 years, but their location and order is variable. The deciduous teeth serve as space keepers for permanent teeth favoring a harmonious growth of the jaw. Decay of deciduous teeth can cause pain, infections and bad breath just like permanent decay. The treatment of baby teeth can be done with simple and painless techniques for the baby. Baby teeth serve a number of important functions:

  • Allow the child to maintain a healthy diet, consuming solid and soft foods

  • They have an essential function to help with digestion

  • Serve to maintain and guide the eruption of permanent teeth in their correct positions

  • Allow normal development of the bony bases of the jaw

  • Affect the development of word articulation and the child's self-confidence

  • Our goal is to reduce the risk of oral pathologies in the future and increase the longevity of healthy and beautiful smile.

Permanent teeth have their beginnings at the age of 6 years, starting with the emergence of the first teeth and the lower central incisors. This process continues until the age of 21 with the emergence of third (maturity) teeth. An adult patient has 28 permanent series teeth and 32 dental elements including the ocular teeth. Their presence is important because it allows the child to feed, laugh and talk.

When should children start brushing their teeth?

Good dental care begins before the baby's first tooth appears. Just because you do not see the teeth does not mean that they are not there. Teeth actually begin to form in the second trimester of pregnancy. At birth, your baby has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw. Here's when and how to take care of those little teeth:

  • Even before your baby's teeth come out, put a clean, damp cloth on the gums to clean the harmful bacteria.

  • When your baby gets teeth, brush them with a baby toothbrush.

  • Use water and a little fluoride toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice).

  • Use fluoride toothpaste. (If you use fluoride-free baby toothpaste, keep it in the same amount because you still want to minimize any toothpaste that is swallowed.)

  • Around the age of 2, your baby should learn to spit while bathing.

  • Avoid giving water to your child to chew and spit the toothpaste because in this case the child may make swallowing the toothpaste.

  • Children 3 years of age and older should use only a small amount of pea-sized toothpaste.

  • Always supervise children younger than 8 years old when brushing their teeth, as they are likely to swallow toothpaste.

  • Babies can also suffer from tooth decay. Putting a baby to sleep with a bottle can damage a baby’s teeth.

  • The sugars from the liquid, formula or milk that stay on the baby's teeth for hours can lead to tooth decay.

When should the first visit be made?

The first visit should be made around the age of 2-3 years, in such a way as to teach the child how to take care of deciduous teeth and gums. Meanwhile at this age, they can start with oral hygiene treatments and regular checkups at their dentist. The purpose of the first visit at such an early age is to teach the child to get to know and adapt to the work environment, in order to become familiar, experiencing it as a non-disturbing experience for him.
